Post-Vasectomy Sperm Test

A vasectomy is an effective permanent contraception method, but it does not work straight away.  It takes time to clear the live sperm from the upper part of the vas deferens.  Usually, this residual sperm clears after 20 ejaculations. In men older than 35 it may take closer to 40 ejaculations. The more ejaculations prior to testing, the better.

Additionally, you need to wait at least 3 months before doing the test.  The vas deferens may rejoin at any time but the most dangerous time is the first few months following a vasectomy.

Important: Continue using contraception until your healthcare provider confirms you are no longer fertile.

Options for Testing

For at home, mail-in testing https://snipcheck.com.au/ offer a kit.

You can also drop a sample directly to pathology labs that offer Semen analysis.

Please make sure you select a location that offers “Semen Analysis” as a special test and also contact the lab for a time when they will accept the sample.

All of these companies are independent of Queensland Vasectomy and charge their own independent fees.
