For me the information video made all the difference. All questions are answered before you even step foot in the door. Also couldn’t believe how quickly it was over. It’s now been 5 hours since the op and still no need for painkillers. I highly recommend Dr Sheehan.

Dr Sheehan and his team have done an amazing amount of work to make sure all information is available on their website. The pre appointment video also helps provide all the information required to help make the choice. The procedure couldn't have been any smoother, Dr Sheehan presents well and is all to happy to assist in any last question or pre op nerves. Explained what he was doing through the whole procedures so there are no supprised, honestly slight sting with first needle and that was it, no pain there after. Thanks again Dr Sheehan and your amazing team, left a happy man and don't know what all the fuss is about.

Queensland Vasectomy was recommended to me by a friend. I was quite anxious about the procedure in the lead up. Grace at reception was very welcoming and Dr. Sheehan was very reassuring and relaxed putting me at ease immediately. The procedure was over in roughly 30 minutes. I would certainly recommend Queensland Vasectomy to any of my friends who are thinking of having this procedure.

Vasectomy FAQs

How much does a vasectomy cost?

The cost is transparent and includes all elements of the procedure, from the initial consultation to the actual procedure and post-procedure care. With Queensland Vasectomy, there are no hidden charges, ensuring that you can plan your finances with confidence.

To facilitate ease and convenience, we offer online booking. Simply click on the booking button at the top of this page to schedule your appointment.

Are there any risks of a vasectomy?

Dr Sheehan’s has years of experience and will do everything to minimise any complications, however, all surgical procedures carry an element of risk. Your consent form will detail all of the relevant risks, the most prominent of which can be: Bruising that will usually disappear after about a week Mild pain and swelling that will decrease a few days after your procedure. A less common complication can include a large bruise within the scrotum, however you can reduce your chances of this by avoiding any lifting of heavy objects in the days after your procedure. If this is necessary for the type of work you do, you will require some time off work.

How will I know my procedure has taken effect?

It is very important to note that the vasectomy procedure does not work immediately. You must continue to use other forms of contraception and consider yourself fertile until our team has confirmed to you that your procedure is successful and you can stop using alternative contraceptives. This confirmation will involve a semen analysis at the three-month mark to confirm that you are sterile. The reason for this is that it is possible for some remaining sperm to exist within the tubes post procedure; which will require time for your body to “clean out the pipes”.

When can I resume sexual activities?

In most cases it is fine to resume sexual activity after about one week. This can differ based on your individual healing ability, so we recommend taking it slow, and it is vitally important to remember to continue other forms of contraception until we have given you the all-clear.

Can I have my Vasectomy under General Anaesthetic or sedation?

At this stage we only offer vasectomy under local anaesthetic. For sedation or general anaesthetic we recommend you obtain a referral to a urologist.

What is the success rate of a vasectomy?

Vasectomies have a high success rate, typically over 99%. When you choose Queensland Vasectomy, you are opting for a team that prides itself on its meticulous approach to each procedure, which contributes to the successful outcomes.

How long will I need to recover after a vasectomy?

Recovery times can vary, but typically, complete recovery is achieved within one week. Non-physical work can usually be resumed after two to three days. Queensland Vasectomy provides detailed post-procedure care instructions to aid in your recovery process.

Is vasectomy always 100% effective?

While a vasectomy is one of the most effective forms of contraception, no method is 100% effective. However, a vasectomy has a success rate of over 99%. We strive for the highest standard of service to provide you with optimal results.

How will a vasectomy affect my relationship with my partner?

A vasectomy can relieve the stress and worry of an unplanned pregnancy and could potentially enhance a couple’s sexual relationship. It is important to discuss this decision with your partner before proceeding with the surgery.

What happens if I change my mind after a vasectomy? Can it be reversed?

While vasectomy reversal procedures exist, they are more complex and not always successful. Therefore, a vasectomy should be considered a permanent decision. We advise all patients to be sure about their decision before proceeding.

Will I still be able to ejaculate after a vasectomy?

Yes, a vasectomy procedure only blocks sperm – it doesn’t affect the prostate or seminal vesicles that produce the bulk of the ejaculate. Therefore, you will still be able to ejaculate as usual after the surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure itself takes only around 15 minutes. But to provide you full care and confidence, appointments are booked for approximately 45 minutes, allowing you to minimise time away from work.

You can drive yourself home after the procedure.

How do I get my Medicare Rebate?

Once you have had your vasectomy and paid for it, we will process your Medicare rebate on your behalf. You will usually receive your payment into the bank account you have nominated with Medicare within 48 hours. If you have not received the payment 1 week after your vasectomy please contact us.

How painful is the vasectomy procedure?

The vasectomy procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is generally associated with minimal discomfort. At Queensland Vasectomy, patient comfort is a top priority. You may experience a slight sensation during the procedure, but any severe pain is uncommon.

Can I drive home after my vasectomy?

Yes, you can drive home after having a vasectomy at Queensland Vasectomy. Our modern, no-scalpel technique minimizes discomfort and typically allows for a faster recovery compared to traditional methods.

However, it’s important to remember that responses to medical procedures vary from person to person. Some men might experience light-headedness or dizziness immediately following the procedure. If you faint during blood tests, we recommend arranging for someone to drive you home if possible, just as a precaution.

In general, most men find they’re able to return to their usual activities, including driving, soon after the procedure. We’re committed to your well-being and will give you specific aftercare instructions to help ensure a comfortable and quick recovery.

When will I be able to return to work?

The answer to this question really depends on the type of work you do. If your work involves manual labour, it is vital that you do not lift anything heavy for the first week. If, on the other hand, you work in an office, you can often go straight back to work. A medical certificate can be provided by our team if you require one to stay home longer.

Will a vasectomy affect my sexual performance or libido?

No, a vasectomy does not affect your testosterone levels, sexual drive, or ability to perform sexually. These are common misconceptions that our team at Queensland Vasectomy is ready to dispel.

Are there any long-term health risks associated with a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is generally considered a safe procedure with minimal long-term health risks. However, like any medical procedure, complications can occur, although they are infrequent. These can be discussed during your consultation at Queensland Vasectomy.

What is the emotional impact of a vasectomy? Can it cause depression or emotional distress?

Emotional responses can vary greatly from person to person. Before undergoing the procedure, it’s crucial to discuss any concerns you may have with our healthcare professionals. At Queensland Vasectomy, we are dedicated to your overall wellbeing.

Are there any alternatives to vasectomy for long-term contraception?

Yes, other long-term methods include hormonal and non-hormonal IUDs, contraceptive implants, or sterilisation for women. However, a vasectomy is a highly effective one-time procedure with a lower risk of complications than female sterilisation methods.
